‘THE RISE OF SYDNEY’S DEPARTMENT STORES ‘
Saturday, October 13th, 2012
COSHA Annual General Meeting was held on Saturday October 13th in the Lord Mayor's Reception Room at Sydney Town Hall.
Speaker: Michael Lech
Historic Houses Trust curator Michael Lech talked about the rise of Sydney's 19th century department stores; Where family household names such as Beard Watson Ltd., Bebarfalds and Grace Brothers, Mark Foy's and Marcus Clark were everyday shopping destinations.
During the 19th century, a number of commercial families rose to prominent positions of power in Sydney's business, social and political worlds despite their humble origins. Their department stores - such as Anthony Horden & Sons, Mark Foy's and David Jones - alterned Sydney's landscape both physically through their landmark buildings and culturally by attracting huge numbers to the city.
